About the Department

The Sharon-York Volunteer Fire Department is a volunteer department in the center of the small town of Sharon, SC. Sharon has a population of under 600 but we serve areas well outside of town and serve as mutual aid to several other departments. Last year, we went on 136 calls and are expected to exceed that number this year. That averages out to a call every 2-3 days.

Our department has 2 stations, one on York Street in Sharon and one on Hord Road, which is considered York but our fire district overlaps into York. The main station on York St has 5 bays, houses 6 apparatus, and a rescue station for EMT. Station 2 has 3 apparatus.

We have many people who have been with the fire department for many years as well as some newer volunteers. Many have 1152 (basic firefighting), several have Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2. We have a family feel to our fire department and really stick together. We will take anyone who would like to help us, even if they do not wish to fight fires.

Why Sharon—York Volunteer Fire Department?

Our department is like a big family. Even if you are not from the Sharon area originally, we still embrace you and take you in as one of our own. People say there is a brotherhood in firefighting and we can truly attest to that. We spend time together outside of the fire department and most of us have a best friend within the fire department. It is really important to have that camaraderie because if you trust one another outside the department, you know you will trust them when you are on a call. Many of us actually involve our families in the department. There are several husband and wife teams, father and son teams, as well as grandfather and grandson teams on the department. Several of the children are anticipating turning 14 so they can become junior firefighters. There is a place for everyone on our department.
