About the Department

Originally organized as a volunteer fire department in 1929 with a single engine company, Cowpens was then just one of five fire departments in Spartanburg County. Today the department is a combination department (paid & volunteer) which protects a primary area of 13.7 square miles and assists in protecting a total area of around 115 square miles in both Spartanburg and Cherokee counties.

Through hard work and diligent appropriation of resources the Cowpens Fire Department’s Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating was reclassified in 2015 to a Class 3. This new rating has lowered insurance rates for homeowners and businesses, showing the department’s efficient use of resources provided by taxpayers.

The Town of Cowpens Fire Department is ready to respond to emergency calls around the clock. The Department is organized into three divisions: Suppression, Inspections and Public Education, and Technical Operations.

Many times, our firefighters can be seen outside of the fire station cleaning and maintaining the community’s investment in emergency apparatus, conducting training exercises, assisting citizens and/or visitors, performing pre-plans, conducting public fire education classes, or a number of other activities that enhance the public’s safety.
