About the Department

The Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department is located in a small rural community of approximately 5,000 residents (or 1,500 residences) in Cherokee County of upstate South Carolina. The department borders North Carolina to the north and two other cities to the southeast and southwest in South Carolina. Currently, inside the Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department’s immediate response area is: a granite mine (that employs over 100 people), a hydro-electric plant (that employs over 50 people), approximately ten miles of a natural gas pipeline, four miles of a two-lane Interstate (I-85), and approximately five miles of the Broad River that supplies Lake Whelchel. This lake is the reservoir for Cherokee County’s drinking water.

Cherokee County is over 400 square miles and has a population of over 55,000 permanent residents. Other infrastructure within the Buffalo VFD’s district includes: churches, mobile home parks, subdivisions, convenience stores, farmland, and industry. The community we protect covers 25 square miles and there are less than 30 hydrants to cover our entire community. The department has 20 active members and two stations (main station has four trucks and substation has three trucks.)
